The House of God Church – Florida East Coast Diocese hosted a momentous Emeritus Celebration honoring Bishop Dr. Semmie Z. Taylor, a distinguished faith leader, activist, and visionary who has dedicated his life to ministry and social justice. This event, held in Pompano Beach, Florida, brought together family, clergy, civic leaders, and community members to celebrate Bishop Taylor’s 92 years of life and his unwavering commitment to God’s people.

Born on January 1, 1933, in Boca Raton, Florida, Bishop Taylor’s life has been marked by faith, courage, and service. Over the decades, he has pastored multiple congregations across Florida, Texas, and Tennessee, serving as a Chief Helper, a Supreme Executive Council member, and a General Trustee in the House of God Church. His leadership has strengthened the church’s foundation, both spiritually and structurally, ensuring that future generations inherit a thriving ministry.

Beyond the pulpit, Bishop Taylor has been a trailblazer for social justice. His early years were filled with acts of courage, including leading a historic protest for Black golfers’ rights in Delray Beach and organizing the first garbage workers’ strike in the city. He was an advisor for school integration, a vice president of the local NAACP, and a relentless advocate for equality, even in the face of threats from the Ku Klux Klan.

Bishop Taylor’s activism extended globally. On multiple mission trips to Haiti, he went beyond preaching—he taught sustainable farming techniques, business development, and self-sufficiency skills to empower communities. His commitment to helping others was not just a calling—it was his life’s work.

Among his many accolades, Bishop Taylor was recognized as “Man of the Year” by St. Paul AME Church in 1978 and was an honoree at the 20th Annual African Diaspora Celebration in 2023. His civic leadership included serving as Chairman of the Delray Beach Housing Authority, President of the Christian Movement for Civic Action, and a leader in numerous community organizations.

Throughout today’s celebration, speakers reflected on Bishop Taylor’s powerful influence in shaping lives, strengthening communities, and expanding the Kingdom of God. His family, friends, and fellow clergy members expressed their deep gratitude for his decades of service, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to the faith.

“Bishop Taylor is a leader among leaders,” said a church official during the ceremony. “His life is a testament to faith in action, and his impact will continue to inspire generations to come.”

As Bishop Taylor assumes emeritus status, his legacy remains alive in the countless lives he has touched. His ambition to uplift others and advance God’s Kingdom continues through the ministries and movements he built.

The House of God Church celebrates former pastor of Pompano #1, former diocese prelate of Haiti, Illinois, and Wisconsin, Bishop Dr. Semmie Z. Taylor’s extraordinary life and service, thanking him for his unparalleled contributions to the church and the world.
